Contract duration: six months from commencement.

We are seeking a Borough Archivist for a six month period to cover the work of the current Borough Archivist, who will be working full-time on the Heritage Lottery Funded Conisbrough Court Rolls project.

This is an exciting time for Doncaster’s Heritage Services as we prepare to move out of the old Archives into a new £15m Library, Heritage and Art Gallery building, with the creation of a Volunteer and Research Centre at the current museum, where the Archives will be stored. The postholder will be required to play an important part in the development of plans for both the buildings and the heritage interpretation within them.

The Borough Archivist is responsible for the Doncaster Archives, which is a Diocesan Record Office and place of deposit, for the building management of the Archives building, for managing the National Archives funded Bagshaw photographic collection project and for promoting the Archives within Doncaster. We wish this to be extended to promotion via social media as well as through traditional methods such as events.

The successful candidate will have a Masters Degree / Post Graduate Diploma in Archive Administration, or equivalent. They will have experience of good partnership working and development and particularly of digitising and cataloguing archives. As the Borough’s professional archivist they will be required to bring to discussions around the new building a thorough professional knowledge and will be expected to be fully briefed on current professional practice. As an individual the successful candidate must demonstrate a flexible approach, an ability to work as an enthusiastic and professional advocate for Doncaster Council to be accurate, with attention to detail and to be able to control workloads and organise priorities within prescribed timescales.

You will have some knowledge of budget management and basic to intermediate digital skills – particularly for Microsoft Office and collections databases. Experience of cataloguing using CALM would be an advantage.

The postholder will also be expected to work some evenings and weekends in line with the needs of the Service.
